Another ship tilts

Paradip(Orissa), Sept 10 (PTI) A day after a Mongolian merchant vessel sank off the Paradip port, a China-bound Vietnamese cargo ship with 22 Vietnamese crew members is tilting in mid-sea today, official sources said.

The ship carrying 24,400 tonnes of iron ore developed a problem in the sea 150km off the coast, they said adding the vessel was on its way back to the port here.

"The MV Vialline Migsty of Vietnam left Paradip Port this morning at about 9.30 am and sent an SOS to traffic control stating that it was tilting towards one side", Paradip Port Trust's (PPT) deputy-conservator G P Biswal told PTI.

"The ship has tilted only six degrees, which is managable. A ship can easily sail 150 km back to the port with such little tiltation in normal weather ...

ship transporting iron ore sank off Paradip port

A Mongolian ship transporting iron ore to China on Wednesday sank off Paradip port tonight killing one of the 27 crew members while the others were rescued.

Alexander Liosiko, 45, the Chief Engineer of the ship 'Black Rose' drowned as he tried till the last to save the vessel from going down in the Bay of Bengal.

Captain Servey Kamarov and 25 other crew members were rescued by the Coast Guard while they were floating in the sea wearing life jackets.

The ship, owned by a person in Mongolia and registered in Ulan Bator, had come to Paradip in August but got permission for loading only today.

Port sources said the Sea Trans Private Limited was the agency which was sending iron ore from Orissa to China.

According to Protection and Indemnity surveyor Captain G Mantri, the ship was loaded with iron ore files having excess moisture content.

When the captain of the ship objected to loading of raw materials having excess moisture content, his complaint was not taken into consideration by Sea Trans Private Limited, sources said.

According to UN guidelines, the cargo being transported in ships must have transportable moisture limits.

After loading of about 24,000 metric tonnes of iron ore files, the ship tilted to the right and finally sank when 7,000 tonnes more were left to be loaded.

Investigations found the vessel had developed a hole.

Another ship named 'Voracious Sky' was also loaded by the same transporting agency with materials of high moisture content yesterday, sources said.

In 2007, a ship narrowly escaped sinking due to having loaded materials having high moisture content.

The Chinese cargo m/v "Black Rose", 22263 gt (IMO: 7602455), with about 22,000 tons of iron ore sank off Paradip port on Sep 9. Coast Guard and the port authorities have rescued the 27 crew members on board. Port officials said they received a distress signal from the "Black Rose" after it had left its berth around 5 p.m. As it tried to anchor outside the harbour, it developed some problems and began sinking. Rescue forces received an SOS from the ship's captain and rushed to the scene of disaster, rescue operations were going on till late in the night. The vessel, operating under a Mongolian flag, capsized 5-6 km (3-4 miles) off the harbour area after it had loaded iron ore at Paradip port. Of the total 27 crew members, 26 have been rescued. The accident had not disrupted shipping traffic. Rescuers are trying to find the missing crew member but local police believe he has probably died.
